Prison Museum Veenhuizen
The first Prison Museum in the town of Veenhuizen was opened on May 18, 1975 in an old concrete house on the Hoofdweg. The reason behind the opening of the museum was the collecting mania and effort of Mr. Standhart. About 30 years later the new National Prison Museum opened its doors, this time in a completely restored asylum founded in 1823. Now-a-days the museum has grown into a professional organization with 24 employees, about 90 volunteers and an active Friends Association. In 2007, the Prison Museum was named best historical museum in the Netherlands and in 2009 it achieved a record number of 100,000 visitors.
